Otto Janke (born December 19, 1818 in Magdeburg , † December 7, 1887 in Berlin ) was a German publisher and bookseller in Berlin.

Life

Janke, who holds a PhD in philology, was the founder of the Otto Janke publishing house named after him in 1843, based at Anhalterstrasse 8 in Berlin-Kreuzberg , which made a name for itself mainly with the publication of 19th century fiction works. In the 19th century, his publishing house held a leading position in Germany as a place of publication for novels. The authors published there included: Willibald Alexis , Albert Emil Brachvogel , August Kühne (1829–1883) under the pseudonym J. v. Dewall, Karl Gutzkow , George Hesekiel , Mór Jókai , Fanny Lewald , Wilhelm Raabe ,Friedrich Spielhagen , Iwan Turgenew , Hans Wachenhusen . With Joseph Victor von Scheffel he got into a dispute over the first edition of “Ekkehard” (1855), so that he relinquished his publishing rights. Janke's collection of fiction novels at cheap prices , which comprised several hundred volumes, gained popularity . In 1864 Otto Janke founded the Deutsche Romanzeitung , which was an important pillar of the publishing house for decades until it was released in 1921.

Otto Janke was married to Edith Rhens. His sons Gustav Janke (1849–1901) and Richard Janke († 1897) took over the publishing house in 1885 and expanded it further. After Gustav Janke's death, his wife Editha continued the publishing house until it was taken over by her son Erich Janke (* 1878) on January 1, 1903. The publishing house existed in Berlin until 1945.
