Otto Kriens

Otto Kriens (born August 31, 1930 in Rheine ; † April 14, 2014 in Bremen ) was a German doctor.

Life

Otto Kriens, son of a dentist, studied dentistry at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1951 to 1956 after graduating from high school Dionysianum in Rheine, Westphalia . In 1956 he was charged with a thesis on the Maxillofacial Surgery for Dr. med. dent. did his doctorate and then studied human medicine in Münster. In 1958 the state examination took place, in 1959 the doctorate to Dr. med. From 1959 to 1960 he studied in the USA and completed his training as a specialist in oral and jaw diseases at the University of Hamburg . In 1970 he completed his habilitation in Hamburg.

In 1975 he was appointed adjunct professor at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg . Shortly thereafter, he was appointed director and chief physician of the clinic for maxillofacial surgery at the central hospital Sankt-Jürgen-Strasse of the Bremen-Mitte Clinic in Bremen .

Kriens developed the method of intravelar veloplasty, which became one of the standard methods of modern surgery. He was considered an expert in cleft surgery. He was committed to the organization International Association of Dento-Maxillo-Facial Radiology (IADMFR) and was its editor of the specialist journal for many years.

In 1981 Otto Kriens was appointed Knight of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien Cardinal de Fuerstenberg and invested in the Augsburg Cathedral on May 23, 1981 by Franz Hengsbach , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . He was last Commander of the Order.
