Otto Lange (born October 29, 1879 in Dresden ; † December 19, 1944 there ) was a German expressionist painter and graphic artist.

Life

After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter, he became a student at the Dresden School of Applied Arts and then studied with Otto Gussmann at the Art Academy . From 1915 to 1919 he was a teacher at the arts and crafts school in Bromberg. From 1919 he lived in Dresden and belonged to the Dresden Secession Group in 1919 , from 1921 he was a member of the Academic Council of Saxony. In 1925 he was appointed professor at the State Art School for the Textile Industry in Plauen (Vogtland) by Karl Hanusch . In 1926 he painted the Luther Church in Ellefeld / Vogtland. After his impeachment by the National Socialists in 1933, he worked as a freelance artist in Dresden. In 1938 two of his pictures were shown at the Berlin exhibition Degenerate Art . With the onset of war and the stigma of the degenerate artist, Lange did not achieve his great artistic breakthrough, although his work was already appreciated in the 1920s. Lange left behind an extensive graphic work. His subjects range from religious depictions and still lifes to book illustrations (Van Zanten's happy time, 1919/1920). Both his watercolor monotypes and especially the relief prints are to be emphasized. Lange's formal language and style can clearly be assigned to Expressionism . In contrast to other expressionist woodcutters, Lange mainly worked with the very elaborate technique of high-color printing. For the most part, Lange did not print his work with a press, but instead produced hand rubs after he had inked the printing block with a brush instead of a roller.
