Otto Luschnat

Otto Luschnat (born March 10, 1911 in Canzow ; † January 24, 1990 in Berlin ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Otto Luschnat came from the village of Canzow near Woldegk in Mecklenburg. From 1930 he studied classical philology and German at the universities of Jena , Vienna and Berlin . He joined the SA on November 1, 1933 , where he assumed the rank of Rottenführer , and became a member of the NSDAP on May 1, 1937 ( membership number 4,362,711). From 1937 to 1939 he completed the grammar school preparatory service.

In 1939 he was at John Stroux with a dissertation on The commander speeches in the historical works of Thucydides doctorate . Then he was busy holding Greek and Latin language courses at the University of Berlin. From 1947 he worked at the Institute for Hellenistic-Roman Philosophy of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin , where he was preparing a new edition of the Fragments of the Epicureans .

In 1955 Luschnat was employed as a lecturer in Classical Philology at the Church University of Berlin-Zehlendorf and in 1956 appointed professor with a chair. After his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin (1958), he held lectures there as part of a teaching assignment . From 1954 to 1970 he was co-editor of the journal Philologus and from 1963 of the series of texts and comments .

Luschnat's research focus was the Greek historian Thucydides , with whom he had been intensively involved since his student days. After his dissertation, which appeared in the Philologus supplements in 1942, he published in 1954 - as the fourth edition of Karl Hude's edition - a critical edition of the historical work in Teubner-Verlag and an extensive article for the Realencyclopadie der classical antiquity , which is also a special edition appeared.

In addition, Luschnat dealt with ancient intellectual history , philosophy and music theory . His habilitation thesis also came from this area, only an extract of which appeared in print.
