Otto Mørkholm

Otto Mørkholm (born July 28, 1930 in Copenhagen , † July 16, 1983 in Frederiksberg ) was a Danish numismatist .

Otto Mørkholm studied Classical Philology and History at the University of Copenhagen , where he received his MA in 1955 , and in 1966 he received his doctorate from the University of Aarhus . From 1959 he worked at the Royal Coin and Medal Collection in Copenhagen, from 1960 until his death as director. In addition, he taught from 1967 to 1982 as a lecturer for ancient history and numismatics at the University of Copenhagen. From 1965 to 1979 he was also the secretary of the International Numismatic Commission.

Mørkholm mainly dealt with Greek coins, especially the coinage of the Hellenistic period . For example, he published a comprehensive work on the coins of Antiochus IV of Syria , and his book on early Hellenistic coinage was published posthumously. Together with Margaret Thompson and Colin M. Kraay, he published the standard work on Greek coin hoards. He presented his museum's holdings in nine volumes of the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum .

Mørkholm was awarded the Archer M. Huntington Medal in 1981 and the Royal Numismatic Society's medal in 1982, and in 1983 he was elected a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences .
