Georges Le Rider

Georges Le Rider (born January 27, 1928 in Saint-Hernin , † July 3, 2014 in Givors ) was a French classical scholar , numismatist and librarian . He was head of the French national library ( Bibliothèque nationale de France ) and was primarily concerned with the coins of the ancient Greek world.

Already an orphan at a young age, Le Rider studied from 1948 at the École normal supérieure . There he met Henri Seyrig , who developed into a kind of personal mentor for him. In 1952 he finished his studies with the Agrégation in classical philology . From 1952 to 1955 he worked at the École française d'Athènes , then until 1958 at the Institut français du Proche-Orient . Back in France, he got a job at the coin and antiquities collection of the French national library , the Cabinet des Médailles. He was appointed head of the company in 1961. In 1975 he was appointed head of the national library. In 1981 he left this post and was appointed director of the Institut français d'études anatoliennes in Istanbul . During these professional activities, Le Rider was also a lecturer at the École pratique des hautes études and briefly at the University of Lille . From 1970 to 1986 he was also a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (New Jersey) .

After returning from Turkey in 1984, he became a lecturer at the University of Paris IV , where he stayed until 1993. In 1989 he was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres . Two years later he took over a research group at the Center national de la recherche scientifique , which he headed until 1995. In 1993, Georges Le Rider was appointed professor of economic and monetary history of the Hellenistic Orient at the Collège de France , and in 1998 he retired .

Georges Le Rider was a member of various international scientific societies, of learned societies ( Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique , Polska Akademia Umiejętności , American Philosophical Society ) and of the International Numismatic Commission , as whose president he also served. The Université catholique de Louvain and the University of Lausanne each awarded him honorary doctorates . In 1977 he was accepted into the Legion of Honor and honored in 2008 with the Officer's Cross. In addition, he was an officer of the Ordre national du Mérite and commander of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and was awarded the Swedish North Star Order and the Senegalese Order of Lions . His son Jacques Le Rider is a German and cultural scientist.
