Otto Philipp Zaunschliffer

Otto Philipp Zaunschliffer (born March 9, 1653 in Hanau ; † February 28, 1729 in Marburg ) was a German lawyer and professor at the University of Marburg . He is known for a humorous legal treatise on fleas that is still being reprinted in the present.

Life

Zaunschliffer studied secular and ecclesiastical law at the universities of Herborn , Marburg and Jena . In 1678 he received his licentiate ( lic. Iur. ) And worked as a lawyer at the Hanau District Court. In 1682 he received a teaching post from the University of Marburg as a professor of eloquence (“good faith”) and history, a year later he became an extraordinary, and finally in 1684 a full professor. In Heidelberg he obtained his doctorate in both rights ( Dr. iuris utriusque ) in 1686 . His son Heinrich Philipp Zaunschliffer was Professor of Law in Duisburg from 1721 to 1728.

Act

He was mainly concerned with contradictions in the work of David Mevius and was thus a critic of the more progressive Usus modernus pandectarum and an advocate of a strict, traditional application of Roman law . His own little writings were of little importance in legal history, only a joking treatise on fleas in the form of erotic student disputes, which were intended to ridicule the Usus modernus as an example , found wide circulation and multiple editions (1702, 1768 and 1866). Zaunschliffer used the pseudonym Opizius Jocoserius for this font ; several editions translated into German appeared in the 20th century. This font was mistakenly assigned to the young law student Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .
