Johannes Otto Roth (born August 25, 1853 in Teufen AR ; † September 6, 1927 there ) was a Swiss bacteriologist and hygienist .

Life

Roth was the son of Landammann Johannes Roth (1812–1870) and studied medicine at the universities in Zurich, Bern and Heidelberg. After internships in Berlin, Vienna, Prague and Paris, he settled for a short time as a doctor in the canton of Appenzell . Shortly afterwards, however, he switched back to science and became a student of Robert Koch in Berlin. He then completed his habilitation in 1890 at the Hygiene Institute of the University of Zurich , where he held lectures. Roth was appointed full professor at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich in 1894 , where he held the chair for bacteriology and hygiene until 1920 until the illness-related task in 1920. He held lectures for a wide variety of disciplines at this university such as pharmacists, mechanical engineers, chemists, architects and civil engineers with the Focus on environmentally friendly living and working. A considerable improvement in the drinking water supply in major cities in Switzerland can be traced back to him.

The engineer Arnold Roth was his son; the long-time envoy of Switzerland to the German Reich Arnold Roth was his brother 18 years older.
