Otto Soellner

Otto Söllner (born July 26, 1903 in Munich , † May 10, 1983 in Freilassing ) was a German music educator , general director of the Trier Opera and conductor a. a. of the Saigon Symphony Orchestra.

life and work

Söllner was a graduate of the Mozarteum in Salzburg . He then worked as a conductor in Krefeld (1926–1935), Aachen (1935–1939), Trier (1939–1940) and Gießen (1940–1944) before becoming General Director of the Trier Opera in 1947. In 1960 the Foreign Office sent Söllner to South Vietnam for the first time , where he led the Saigon Symphony Orchestra at the request of the South Vietnamese government. Overall, with the support of the Federal Foreign Office, he stayed in South Vietnam until 1968. From 1963 he was mainly active as a music teacher in Huế . After the Tet offensive , Söllner fled Vietnam in 1968 and settled in Freilassing .
