Otto Sýkora

Otto Sýkora (born January 1, 1873 in Mirošov u Rokycan , German  Miröschau in Bohemia , then Austria-Hungary , now the Czech Republic ; † November 30, 1945 in Timișoara , Kingdom of Romania ) was a musician and composer .

Life

Otto's parents were Johann (Jan) Sýkora ( Inspector montanus ) and Karola , nee Safarik . Otto Sýkora graduated from elementary school in his native village and attended the commercial school ( Prague ) and the Prague Conservatory , where he studied violin , composition and music theory . After visiting his uncle Anton Safarik in Anina (German: Steierdorf ), he decided to stay in the Banat . In the years 1890 (Anina) and 1895 Reșița (German: Reschitza ) he took the position as a civil servant in the upper administration. He had to return to his homeland at short notice to complete his military service. On June 3, 1897, Sýkora married Alma Müller , who gave birth to a daughter on September 22, 1898. Alma was a talented piano player and gave numerous concerts in her youth. Later she lived in Timișoara (married Krayer ).

Otto Sýkora took over the management of the factory chapel in Reșița in 1906. Like his predecessor Anton Pavelka , he arranged the various scores for the band himself and also practiced composition. His many brass music works are still played by numerous brass bands today without his name being known. After the First World War he became a member of the Composers Union in Bucharest . His works have been broadcast regularly by the Bucharest, Budapest ( Richard Fricsay orchestras ) and Austrian radio ( Josef Holzner orchestra ). The Vienna Concert Orchestra , led by Holzer, recorded his pieces as part of the permanent repertoire. Sýkora retired on June 15, 1930 and moved to live with his daughter in Timișoara, where he died on November 30, 1945.
