Otto Schmelzeisen (born April 10, 1892 , † March 11, 1983 ) was a German judo pioneer and holder of the 8th Dan Judo.

Life

Schmelzeisen got to know in 1922 as a police officer in training Jiu Jitsu and in December of the same year founded the later Judo Club Wiesbaden 1922 , whose dojo is named after him today. He took part in 1932 together with Alfred Rhode in the Frankfurt Forest Station at the first International Judo Summer School in Germany organized by the 1st DJC (Frankfurt am Main), at which Kanō Jigorō was also present.

1933-1945

In the Third Reich Otto Schmelzeisen held various positions. He was an active advocate of the National Socialists' military training through judo. Among other things he was

  • Deputy Reich Youth Chairman,
  • Gauobmann for Judo in Gau XIII (southwest) (since November 6, 1933),
  • Responsible for judo in the Sportgau Hessen-Nassau of the National Socialist Reichsbund for physical exercises (NSRL) (since 1933),
  • District specialist for heavy athletics in Sportgau Hessen-Nassau (since 1936),
  • Specialist for judo in the Hitler Youth in the Hessen-Nassau area (13) (since November 8, 1938),
  • Course leader for judo, among others, from 2 to 12 October 1943 at the University of Leipzig on a course for top talent and the best of the Reich as well as on an Ordensburg .

As early as 1943, in a letter dated October 25, 1943 to the Vice President of the European Judo Union, Mr. Fritz Brehm (from the 1st DJC (Frankfurt am Main)), he formulated his ambitious sporting plans for the time after the war: " When the war is over and we start our judo summer schools again, then you will experience a HJ camp where you will be amazed and you will see that the work was and is not in vain. So the Japanese ambassador has us if the opportunity arises 1000 judo suits promised for the Hitler Youth and I will be significantly involved in their distribution and our area will be considered accordingly. You can rely on that. [...] So I believe that you too, dear Fritz are satisfied with the work of your Otto, and also believe that I will do my part and everything in my power to strengthen our well-fortified people, who and he only heal primarily through physical exercise strengthens. / Last week I also had to go to the medical exam and was found in the KV field . So I hope and wish that the UK position will be canceled and that I can finally take an active part in the great fight. "

The promotion of judo by the Third Reich, which led to judo gaining a foothold in Germany in the thirties, he assessed in a letter dated November 12, 1940 to the same recipient on letter paper from the National Socialist Reich Association for Physical Exercise as follows: "So we are now leaving everything to rest and are happy that we achieved and fought for the goals we had set for us many years earlier thanks to the Third Reich. I can't help it. I have to keep reminding myself of the pioneers who were responsible for the thought entered and fought for it. So I have my joy that our sport is now marching in the lanes, which has always been our hope and goal with us. "

After 1945

In the court proceedings , Otto Schmelzeisen was classified as a “fellow traveler”. After the Christmas amnesty in 1947, he was considered "unencumbered".

Only in 1948 was it allowed to practice martial arts again in Germany. Schmelzeisen rebuilt the Judo Club Wiesbaden in 1922 and ran it until 1954.

In 1973 Schmelzeisen was the first judoka to be awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class, for his services to the sport of judo . The 8th Dan in Judo was awarded to him in 1977 on his 85th birthday by the German Dan College .
