Otto Sigismund Albrecht Alexander von der Marwitz (born November 7, 1746 at Gut Diedersdorf , Teltow district, † June 16, 1819 in Glatz ) was royal Prussian major general and most recently in command of the Glogau fortress .

origin

His parents were Otto Christian Adolf von der Marwitz (* May 20, 1701; † September 30, 1757) and his wife Gottliebe Elisabeth Eva Marie von der Marwitz from the Grünrade house. His father was a royal Prussian Rittmeister a. D. in the cuirassier regiment No. 5 as well as Herr auf Diedersdorf.

Life

On September 19, 1758 he came as a court page to the Prussian King Friedrich II. After the Seven Years' War , he came on July 2, 1763 as a corporal in the 1st Battalion of the Guard (No. 15). There he became an ensign on February 4, 1766, and second-lieutenant on January 25, 1773, and as such took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On July 19, 1780 he became Premier-Lieutenant, on August 10, 1786, Chief of Staff, and on January 27, 1787, Major in the Army. On June 30, 1792 he became company commander in the 1st Battalion of the Guard. During the First Coalition War he fought in the sieges of Mainz and Landau as well as in the battle near Trippstadt. On January 8, 1795 he became a lieutenant colonel and on February 20, 1795 he became a staff officer of the 1st Battalion of the Guard. On January 19, 1798 he was appointed commander of the grenadier battalion, which was composed of the grenadier companies of the four guard battalions. On May 25, 1798, he was promoted to colonel and on February 26, 1799, he was transferred to the 27th Infantry Regiment as commander .

On July 17, 1802, he came to the Glogau fortress as commandant, which meant a pay of 1200 thalers. On June 18, 1803, he was appointed major general. In the fourth coalition war , the fortress surrendered to the French. On October 23, 1808 it was decided to open court martial against him. He was found guilty in the following trial. On February 1, 1810, he was conceded and 10 years imprisonment convicted. His application to serve his imprisonment in the city of Glatz was rejected. From October 23, 1810, he received a salary of 15 thalers. On May 31, 1814, the remainder of the sentence was waived; on August 27, 1814, his support was increased to 25 thalers. The money was paid out to him until his death in Glatz on June 16, 1819.

He married Charlotte Dorothea Wilhelmine Gebler (born February 20, 1759) in Glogau on August 11, 1802 . King Friedrich II refused the marriage permit, but the couple lived together anyway, first Friedrich Wilhelm III. granted permission in 1802. The couple had two children:

In 1790 the king legitimized his son Gottlieb after von der Marwitz was able to show his family's permission.
