He came from the Saxon noble family von Böhlau and was the son of Franz Christoph Ehrenreich von Böhlau auf Döben and his wife Louise Karoline von Böhlau. After his parents' death in 1840, he inherited their estates and became the owner of the manor in Döben, Haubitz and Oelzschau, the latter being in the Prussian province of Saxony . The Döben manor also had its own brewery, which existed until the 20th century. A major fire in 1857 almost completely destroyed the castle-like buildings of the Döben manor . Subsequently Otto von Böhlau had the manor rebuilt in the neo-renaissance style . At the end of the Second World War, Döben Castle was badly damaged by artillery fire and the ruins were torn down in 1971.

Otto von Böhlau let himself be set up as a member of the state parliament in the capacity of the manor owner and was elected in 1851/1852 for the Leipzig district as a member of the manor owners to the I. Chamber of the Saxon state parliament. He was later elected as a deputy for the manor owners for life.

In the summer of 1893 he died in the Saxon state capital Dresden.

His only son, Carl Christoph Ehrenreich von Böhlau, became the last noble owner of the Döben manor, which was expropriated by the land reform in autumn 1945.
