Ouebion
Ouebion - in Latin Vebium , also Usbium ; ( Greek Οὐέβιον ) - is a place name given in the Geographia of Claudius Ptolemaios as one of the places (πόλεις) lying in the southern Germania magna and along the Danube with 35 ° longitude ( Ptolemaic longitudes ) and 47 ° latitude. According to Ptolemy, Ouebion lies on the Danube between Setouakoton and Abilouon . Because of the age of the source, the existence of the place around 150 AD can be assumed.
So far the place could not be located safely. An interdisciplinary research team led by Andreas Kleineberg, who re-examined the information provided by Ptolemy, locates Ouebion on the basis of the transformed ancient coordinates on the Danube and near today's Linz , Steyregg or Mauthausen in Upper Austria .
He quickly thinks it is possible that during the reading Vebium an initial s - has been lost and the place name means * Suebium - a place name after the popular name Suebi , in whose area the place would have to be searched for according to the Ptolemaic indication.
