Ouirgane ( Central Atlas Tamazight ⵡⵉⵔⴳⴰⵏ Wirgan ) is a Berber village (douar) with around 1,500 or a rural community (commune rurale) with around 7,000 inhabitants on the northern flank of the High Atlas in the province of Al Haouz in the Marrakech-Safi region in Morocco .

location

The approximately 1000 m high place is about 90 kilometers (driving distance) south of the city of Marrakech on the narrow and winding mountain road R203, which connects Marrakech with Taroudant over the Tizi n'Test -Pass . The Oued Nfiss flows through the village and is dammed up nearby by the Barrage Yacoub El Mansour .

Population and economy

Almost exclusively Berber families live in the village and its surroundings , who used to live exclusively from agriculture in the valley of the Oued Nfiss, but mainly from cattle breeding (sheep and goats). As a result of the increasing traffic on the asphalted R203 and the emergence of smaller guest houses ( gîtes ) and hotels for tourists, the character of the place has changed significantly since the 1980s.

Attractions

  • The place has no special attractions. However, it provides a welcome cool-down for the wealthier Moroccans and Europeans from Marrakech in the hot summer months.
  • From Ouirgane, mountain hikes lasting several days can be undertaken, including ascent of Jbel Toubkal (4167 m).
