Overton Hill is a hill about 174 m high on the southern limit of the ridge of the Marlborough Downs in Wiltshire , England . It is located west of West Overton and southeast of Avebury . The A4 trunk road leads directly past its flat summit.
A parking lot on Overton Hill is generally considered to be the starting point of The Ridgeway long distance hiking trail . In the vicinity of the summit there are several barrows and the remains of the Neolithic cult site The Sanctuary . To the west of the hill are the archaeological sites of Silbury Hill , West Kennet Long Barrow and the Avebury Stone Circle .
The group of archaeological sites on the hill includes an Anglo-Saxon cemetery, some unusual graves from the Roman period and up to twelve barrows. Some finds, including a bronze dagger , a bronze staff and a ceramic container are in the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes .
The hill was also known as Sevenbarrow Hill , Seofon Beorgas or Seofon Barrows .
