Oxalobacter formigenes is an oxalate- degrading anaerobic bacterium which occurs colonized in the large intestine of numerous vertebrates, including humans. O. formigenes lives in a symbiosis with humans. Quinolone , a broad-spectrum antibiotic, kills O. formigenes in the gastrointestinal tract . When a person lacks this bacterium, the primary source of the enzyme oxalyl-CoA decarboxylase , which breaks down calcium oxalate , is missing. Such a deficiency can promote the formation of kidney stones containing calcium oxalate.
