Coordinates: 59 ° 23 '50 "  N , 18 ° 26' 30"  O The Oxdjupet ( German  about the depth ox ) is a Sund between Rindö and Värmdö and is a major shipping route to Stockholm . At its narrowest point, the sound is 180 meters wide and it is between 17 and 38 meters deep. In Oxdjupet there is a ferry operated by the state transport company between Rindö and Värmdö.

The narrow sound and the shipping lane were once of great military importance. In 1549 King Gustav Wasa ordered that the Oxdjupet be blocked with underwater obstacles. The purpose of this was to divert the traffic of the large ships to Vaxholm and Kodjupet , where new and for the time modern fortresses had been built.

However, the underwater hazards turned out to be insufficient. After the Russian devastation in the Stockholm archipelago in 1719 , it was decided to build the Fredriksborg fortress on the eastern side of the sound .

After extensive research, it was decided to modernize Vaxholm Fortress and convert it into an even better fortress. Construction began in 1833 and was finished in 1839. As weapons technology made great advances during this period, Vaxholm Fortress was already outdated when it was completed. At the same time, it became more and more difficult for large ships or merchant ships with great drafts to cross the sea route at Vaxholm. In 1867 it was proposed that the Oxdjupet be freed from all artificial maritime obstacles. In order to continue to protect Stockholm, the Fredriksborg fortress was strengthened and expanded. In 1897, the Oskar-Fredriksborg fortress was built on the western side of the sound as a further protective measure . This now served as an additional defense measure.
