Péter Nagy (literary scholar)

Péter Nagy (born October 12, 1920 in Budapest ; † January 20, 2010 there ) was a Hungarian literary scholar .

Life

Nagy studied French and Hungarian at the Péter Pázmány University . After graduating in 1942, he received his doctorate from the University of Geneva . Between 1953 and 1955 he worked for a publishing house and from 1963 to 1966 as a dramaturge for Corvina Kiadó. In 1963 he received his habilitation at the Institute for Literary Studies in Latvian Literature .

From 1966 to 1969 he was professor at the Loránd Eötvös University , from 1971 to 1986 professor at the Paris Sorbonne . In 1973 he became a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and in 1982 a corresponding, later full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. In 1985 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts and was its vice-president from 1985 to 1988. He was also a member and vice-president of the Hungarian PEN clubs.

Nagy was the Hungarian ambassador to UNESCO in Paris from 1985 to 1988.

He was awarded the Attila József Prize (1954, 1955) and the French Ordre des Palmes Académiques for his work.
