Pēteris Juraševskis

Pēteris Juraševskis (born March 23 . Jul / 4. April  1872 greg. , Rural community Sesava , Courland Governorate ; † 10. January 1945 in Jelgava ) was Latvian politician and Prime Minister of the Democratic Center Party ( Demokrātiskā Centra Partija ).

Life

Degree, Minister and Member of Parliament

After working as a civil servant in the government of Courland , he studied law at the University of Saint Petersburg from 1900 to 1904 . He then worked as a lawyer .

After Latvia gained independence on November 18, 1918, he was a member of the first government of Kārlis Ulmanis until July 14, 1919, as Minister of Justice . Only on May 25, 1924 was he reappointed to a government and belonged to the cabinet of Prime Minister Voldemārs Zāmuels until the end of his term on December 18, 1924.

On October 4, 1925 he was elected as a candidate for the Democratic Center Party ( Demokrātiskā Centra Partija ) for the first time as a member of parliament ( Saeima ).

On December 24, 1925, Ulmanis reappointed him as Minister of Justice, but lost this office a month later on January 26, 1926.

Presidential candidate and Prime Minister from 1928

In 1927 he ran unsuccessfully as one of five candidates for the office of President of the Republic of Latvia against Gustavs Zemgals .

On January 24, 1928, he finally became Prime Minister himself, succeeding Marģers Skujenieks . During his term of office, which lasted until November 30, 1928, he was also Minister of Finance until March 8, 1928 . Successor as prime minister was Hugo Celmiņš .
