Voldemārs Zāmuels

Voldemārs Zāmuels (born May 10 . Jul / 22. May  1872 greg. In Dzērbene , Cēsis District ; † 16th January 1948 in Ravensburg ) was Latvian politician and Prime Minister of the Democratic Center Party ( Demokrātiskā Centra Partija ).

Life

Voldemārs Zāmuels graduated from Tartu University in Estonia . He was already from November 30, 1917 to November 17, 1918 as non-party chairman of the Provisional National Council.

After Latvia gained independence on November 18, 1918, he became a judge at the Supreme Court on December 19, 1918. He later became Prosecutor General of the Supreme Court on September 23, 1919.

He was then a deputy of the Legislative Assembly ( Satversmes sapulce ), where he represented the interests of the Democratic Center Party ( Demokrātiskā Centra Partija ). On 19 June 1921 it summoned Prime Minister zigfrīds anna meierovics the Minister of Agriculture . He held this office until July 20, 1922.

On January 27, 1924, he was finally appointed Prime Minister himself as successor to Meierovics . Since the independence of Latvia, he was the first prime minister who did not belong to the Latvian Farmers' Union party ( Latviešu zemnieku savienība ). In his cabinet, which was in office until December 18, 1924, he also assumed the office of Minister of Justice until April 9, 1924 . Successor as prime minister was Hugo Celmiņš .

In the 1927 presidential election, he ran unsuccessfully as one of five candidates against Gustavs Zemgals , who also belonged to the Democratic Center Party. During the Second World War he was in exile in Germany .
