The locomotives of the ET40 series of the Polish State Railways (PKP) are two-part electric locomotives for the transport of freight trains . One locomotive was converted to the EP40 .

ET40 series

The ET40 are double locomotives made up of two identical halves, each with a driver's cab. The two halves of the locomotive are marked with "A" and "B" to distinguish them. The ET40 is similar to the EU05 series , which Škoda delivered to PKP in 1961 , but in a one-piece design.

The ET40 series was also built by Škoda. From 1975 to 1978 60 locomotives were delivered to the PKP.

In 2004 there were still 46 ET40 in stock. All ET40 are located in the Bydgoszcz depot and are mainly used in freight traffic on the north-south route between the Upper Silesian industrial region and the Baltic Sea ports in Gdańsk and Gdynia .

EP40 series

After delivery of the prototypes of the EP09 series for a maximum speed of 160 km / h for use on the Centralna Magistrala Kolejowa Warsaw - Krakow / Katowice , the conversion of the ET40 series to the EP40 series was considered as an alternative. In 1990 the ET40-41 was converted to the EP40-41 by changing the gearbox, using components from the EP05 series (version of the EU05 series converted for 160 km / h). The renovation was carried out by the PKP in the repair shop (ZNTK) Gdańsk. ET40-41 received the orange-colored paint that is common for PKP's high-speed locomotives.

The PKP gave priority to series production of the EP09 series. No further modifications were made, EP40-41 was dismantled again to ET40-41 in 1993.
