The EP09 series locomotives of the Polish State Railways (PKP) are electric locomotives for transporting express trains .

As the first PKP locomotive suitable for 160 km / h ex works, the EP09 was designed under the type designation 104E, and the prototype EP09-001 was completed in 1986. In 1987 the EP09-002 was delivered. Series production (Type 104Ea) began in 1990, and by 1994 35 EP09s were built. The last series from 1995 to 1997 (type 104Eb; 10 locomotives) was delivered with air conditioning in the driver's cab, which was later retrofitted to part of the EP09s that were previously delivered.

The commissioning of the EP09 series led to the almost complete retirement of the EP05, which had been converted from the EU05 series from 1973 to 1977, and to the extensive displacement of the EP08 series on lines with lower maximum speeds. Additional demand arose from the expansion of the Berlin - Warsaw route to 160 km / h from the 1990s.

The EP09 series is still completely in the PKP portfolio. The EP09 are located in the depots in Warsaw and Krakow and are primarily used for the InterCity trains on the Centralna Magistrala Kolejowa Warsaw – Krakow / Katowice and for the Berlin-Warszawa Express on the Section Rzepin - Warsaw. Only the two remaining locomotives of the EP05 series are available as a full reserve; the EP08 series is only approved for speeds of up to 140 km / h.

The EP09s were delivered in a yellow-brown two-tone paintwork. Most of them were later given a white and red paint job by PKP Cargo . From 2007, individual EP09s were painted in the blue color scheme by PKP Intercity .

The series EU11 (type 114E; only for 3 kV direct current) and EU43 (type 112E; multi-system locomotive ) were planned as successor series ; these were ordered and built, but were not delivered to PKP (EU11) or remained due to lack of payment by the PKP not in stock (EU43). It was only with the introduction of the Siemens ES64U4 locomotives at PKP in 2008 that the EP09s were therefore replaced as the youngest locomotives in the PKP's portfolio.

In the railway accident near Szczekociny on March 3, 2012, the EP09-035 collided head- on with a class ET22 locomotive .
