The locomotives of the EU05 series of the Polish State Railways (PKP) were electric locomotives . The 27 remaining locomotives of the series were converted to the EP05 series .

EU05 series

In 1961, the PKP purchased 30 four-axle electric locomotives from Škoda in Plzeň ( Czechoslovakia ). This was a slightly modified variant of the E 499.1 class of the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). Changes affected the headlight arrangement and the brakes.

Since the construction of the EU05 was the first PKP locomotive to be designed for 160 km / h and the actual suitability for this top speed was confirmed in tests in 1969, the remaining 27 EU05 were converted to 160 km / h from 1973 onwards. The locomotives 09, 12 and 19 had already been taken out of service after accidents.

EP05 series

For use on the Centralna Magistrala Kolejowa Warsaw - Krakau / Katowice , which was built from 1971, the EU05 was converted from 1973 to 1977 in the repair shop (ZNTK) Gdańsk by changing the gear ratio from 84: 37 to 77: 44 for a top speed of 160 km / h. In line with their use in express train services , they were given the series designation EP05 and an orange paint instead of the previous paint in two different shades of green.

After serial delivery of the EP09 series began in 1990, the EP05s were largely dispensable after locomotives 11, 13 and 14 had already retired in 1984 and 1986 after accidents. From 1988 to 2000, 22 of the remaining 24 EP05 were retired. Locomotive 22 was refurbished as a monument in the historical paintwork of the EU05.

Due to the non-delivery or acceptance of the EU11 and EU43 series , the last two remaining locomotives 16 and 23 had to remain in stock and continue to be maintained. EP05-23 received the new white-red paint job from PKP Cargo in 2006. The last two EP05s were mainly used on the Centralna Magistrala Kolejowa with express and intercity trains without a fixed schedule and were parked in 2008.
