The locomotives of the ET42 series of the Polish State Railways (PKP) are two-part electric locomotives for the transport of freight trains .

As the third double locomotive for heavy freight train service after the ET40 and alongside the ET41 , the ET42 series was purchased from 1978. These are the only PKP electric locomotives built in the Soviet Union . They were derived from the WL10 and WL11 series of the Soviet railways and built by the Novocherkassk electric locomotive factory until 1978 in a number of 50 locomotives .

The ET42 are double locomotives made up of two identical halves, each with a driver's cab. The two halves of the locomotive are marked with "A" and "B" to distinguish them. The ET42 were the most powerful locomotives of the PKP until 2009 (procurement by the EU44 ).

So far, four ET42s have retired after accidents, the remaining locomotives are at the Łódź depot ( Zduńska Wola Karsznice) and are mainly used in freight traffic on the north-south route between the Upper Silesian industrial region and the Baltic Sea ports in Gdańsk and Gdynia .
