The kkStB 278 was a tank locomotive series of the kk Staatseisenbahnen Österreichs (kkStB) for local rail traffic .

The kkStB 278 was the superheated steam variant of the 178 series  . From 1909 to 1911, the kkStB procured only eight pieces from Krauss in Linz . The first two machines were for the Bukovina local railways , the third for the local railway Tarnopol - Zbaraz determined.

The simply furnished boiler houses preferred the wet steam engines , so that the 278 series was only available in small numbers compared to the 178 series.

After the First World War , the locomotives of this series came to the CFR and to Poland as the PKP  TKp12 .

In 1939 the Deutsche Reichsbahn assigned the Polish machines to the 92.28 series.
