Pachycereus grandis is a species of the genus Pachycereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet grandis means 'big, great'.

description

Pachycereus grandis grows tree-shaped, is densely branched and reaches a height of up to 25 meters. Trunks up to 1 meter in diameter are formed. The light green, upright and columnar shoots have constrictions. There are 9 to 11 ribs , on which the areoles are widely spaced. The three grayish white central spines are up to 6 inches long. The lowest of them is the longest. The nine to ten radial spines are short and somewhat flattened. The large terminal pseudocephalium consists of numerous long thorns or bristles.

The white flowers are up to 4 inches long. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with small, pointed scales and wool. The spherical, dry fruits reach a diameter of 7.5 centimeters and are covered with yellow bristles.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pachycereus grandis is distributed in the Mexican states of México , Michoacán , Morelos , Oaxaca and Puebla at altitudes of 900 to 1,500 m. The first description was in 1909 by Joseph Nelson Rose .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
