The funnel alga ( Padina pavonica ) is a fan-shaped brown alga with concentric rings. This easily recognizable alga is native to almost all seas.

The funnel algae are attached to stones with an adhesive organ ( rhizoid ). The olive-brown to whitish-gray-brown thallus widens from a stem-like base to a fan-shaped, leaf-like lobe. This has parallel to the upper edge of concentric white rings formed by lime be effected storage results. The thallus lobes are more or less rolled up like a bag, at the upper edge they are often divided or torn radially. The top hem is rolled back and lashed. The thallus reaches 2–15 (rarely up to 20) cm in length.

Occurrence

The funnel algae grows just below the water surface on storm-protected sea coasts and can penetrate up to 20 m water depth. It is widespread: in the Northeast Atlantic from Ireland to the Canary Islands and West Africa , in the Mediterranean , in the Caribbean , in the Pacific ( Philippines , Pacific Islands) and in the Indian Ocean .

Systematics

The funnel algae was first described in 1753 by Carl von Linné under the name Fucus pavonicus . Francesca Thivy placed the species in the genus Padina in 1960 . It is the type species of this genus. Further synonyms are Ulva pavonia (L.) L., Dictyota pavonia (L.) Lamouroux, Padina pavonia (L.) JV Lamouroux, Zonaria pavonia C. Agardh and Padina mediterranea Bory de Saint-Vincent.
