Padna

Padna ( Italian : Padena ) is a place in southwestern Slovenia . The Istrian village belongs to the municipality or the city of Piran .

location

Padna is located on the top of a mountain about seven kilometers east of the Adriatic Sea . The place is at an altitude of 208  m. i. J. The Drnica , a tributary of the Dragonja, flows below the village, which often runs dry in summer .

history

The village was originally located about one kilometer east of its current location. Archaeological finds partly date from Roman times . It is not clear when the old location was abandoned and the new one settled. The place was first mentioned in writing in 1186. In the 13th century the church of Sv. Blaža (St. Blaise) built in the new location. Padna has about 150 inhabitants.

economy

The village is dominated by agriculture . The surrounding mountain slopes are planted with olive plantations . In addition, fruit (such as cherries) and vegetables are grown in high and valley areas . Steep slopes are planted with forest. In the past, the planting of Swiss chard played an important economic role. There is a hotel with a restaurant and apartments to rent in the village .

The church of Sv. Blaža (St. Blasius) in Padna

Padna has two churches. Sv. Blaža (St. Blaise) was built in the 13th century and extensively renovated in 1867. It is designated as an architectural monument . The bell tower dates from 1885. In 1992 the church and tower were renovated for the last time. A second smaller church is dedicated to St. Sabas .

In the renovated premises of a former Italian school next to the church of Sv. Blaža there is a gallery of the famous Slovenian painter Božidar Jakac . The permanent exhibition shows drawings and graphics by the artist, who spent part of his life in Padna.
