The Pafsanias volcano also Paphsanias volcano or Pausanias volcano ( Greek Ηφαίστειο Παυσανίας Iféstio Pafsanías ) is a submarine volcano in Greece . It is located 1.5 km northwest of the Methana peninsula in the Gulf of Epidaurus and belongs to the Methana group at the western end of the volcanic arc of the southern Aegean . To the north of the volcano is the island of Kyra and to the east is the island of Angistri .

The submarine volcano was discovered in 1987 and was named in 1990 after the ancient geographer Pausanias , who described the volcanic eruption of Kameno Vouno , located about 2 km to the southeast . The Pafsanias rises from the 400 m deep seabed with a height of 257 m so that the highest point of the crater rim is 143 m below the water surface. The crater is about 300 m below the sea. At the base the volcano has a diameter of about 2 to 3 km. The last outbreak of Pafsanias was around 1700. However, there is no record of the eruption and the tsunami that it triggered . It is assumed that at that time the surrounding coasts were only sparsely populated and therefore no documentation of the disaster is available.
