Paizo Publishing is an American game publisher for pen and paper role-playing games based in Redmond , Washington . The publishing house was founded by Lisa Stevens in 2002 and focuses on sets of rules, game aids and adventures for the world's oldest fantasy role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons, as well as the two spin-off systems Pathfinder and Starfinder developed by Paizo .

Publishing history

The publisher Paizo Publishing was founded in 2002 and initially published until 2007 the role-playing magazines Dragon and Dungeon , founded by TSR , which were licensed by the publisher Wizards of the Coast as the official rights holder of the Dungeons & Dragons series. The publisher Erik Mona was the editor-in-chief of Dragon and the former editor-in-chief of Dungeon was James Jacobs, who is now the publisher's creative director and has been responsible for the Pathfinder collateral materials since 2007 . The company's name is derived from the Greek word παίζω Paizō , which means 'I play' or 'to play'.

In 2008, Paizo launched the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game , which is based on Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 and uses the d20 system published under the Open Game License . Pathfinder developed into one of the most important fantasy role-playing game systems alongside Dungeons & Dragons and is still the main line of the publishing house today. In 2013, the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords, a card game implementation of Pathfinder , which is also known in German as the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game - The Awakening of the Runic Rulers at Ulisses Games was published.

In 2012, Paizo started a kickstarter campaign with the spin-off company Goblinworks to implement Pathfinder as a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). The campaign was funded by nearly 9,000 backers who together raised nearly US $ 1.1 million.

In 2014, the company changed its name to Paizo Inc. In May 2016, Paizo announced Starfinder, a new science fiction role-playing game that was released on November 17th.
