Palazzo Civran Grimani is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Sestiere of San Polo overlooking the Grand Canal , at the confluence of the Rio della Frescada , between the Palazzo Dandolo Paolucci and the Palazzo Caotorta Angaran .

history

Built in the 18th century on the site of an earlier Gothic building from around the 15th century, the palace was designed by an unknown architect. Many architectural historians, including Elena Bassi , attribute the renovation to Giorgio Massari , who could have worked on it between 1720 and 1740. In 1818 the palace was bought by the Grimani family , who had sold Palazzo Grimani to the state. This family later bought the palace back and still owns it today. The mayor Filippo Grimani lived there from 1895 to 1916 . The palace was recently restored.

description

The palace is characterized by a Palladian facade, which is also continued on the side of the building, albeit in a simpler form. It shows many peculiarities of 18th century architecture and neoclassicism in general . The massive ground floor, which appears to be very dominant, differs from the rest of the building in that it is designed as a basement , while the main floor is characterized rather but not completely according to the tradition of being divided into three by seven individual windows of remarkable design. These are particularly long and the front balcony continues on the side facade. Other notable elements are the portal to the water and the cornices that divide the floors. A large garden opens behind the palace.

Individual references and comments

  1. The tripartite division is shown by the fact that the three central windows protrude slightly, but the building does not really show a division into three sectors, as can be seen, for example, in the Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti .
