Palazzo Clary-Ficquelmont is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Dorsoduro sestiere overlooking the Canal della Giudecca , a little to the right of the Palazzo Giustinian Recanati .

history

The palace, built in the 17th century, belonged from the 19th century to the French - Austrian noble family of the Counts of Ficquelmont , then their heirs, the Princes of Clary and Aldringen (from Teplitz Castle ), who gave it its name.

The second main floor used to be the seat of the Consulate of France, where the " hot wire " was installed, which directly connected the USA and Russia (until 1991 the Soviet Union ). This direct telephone connection should reduce the risk of an accidentally triggered nuclear war .

The "hot wire" was activated during the Cold War on August 30, 1963 and the messages were encrypted for dispatch.

description

The main facade in the late Renaissance style extends over three full floors and a mezzanine floor under the roof.

A large, rectangular portal opens on the ground floor, above which a pair of carved coats of arms is placed.

The building has two main floors: on the first floor there are arched openings , a pair of individual windows on each side and a wide quadruple window in the middle, the arches of which are supported by Ionic columns and which is provided with a stone balustrade , adorned with a lion statue . The second floor has the same window layout, although the windows are shorter.

The mezzanine floor with symmetrically arranged, small window openings is crowned by a serrated cornice .

At the rear there are two wings that give the palace a U-shaped floor plan. There is a small garden enclosed by a wall. It opens over an arch to the water of the Rio di Ognisanti .
