Palazzo Mastelli del Cammello is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Cannaregio sestiere , overlooking the Rio Madonna dell'Orto and Campo dei Mori , near the Madonna dell'Orto church .

history

This property once belonged to three brothers ( Rioba, Sandi and Afani ) who came to Venice from the Peloponnese in 1112 and traded there. They later took the surname Mastelli . Traditionally associated with four statues of three Moors and their servant on the Campo dei Mori . The construction of the first palace dates back to the 12th century; the current early Gothic building dates from the 14th century. After the Mastelli family died out , the palace passed to the Prezzatos .

description

The building has three full storeys; the facade facing the Rio Madonna dell'Orto is essentially symmetrical. In the middle of the ground floor there is a round arched portal to the water, flanked by two three-pass windows , each with half-columns on either side. A pair of arched windows are attached to both sides . All these openings are barred. At the very bottom right hand side there is a small fountain for people who come by boat.

On the first main floor there is a triple arched window above the portal, the individual windows of which are separated from one another by Doric columns. In front of them lies a protruding balcony with balusters , supported by four simple consoles . This triple window is flanked by two pairs of simple arched windows between half-columns. The outermost left window has a thick three-quarter column with reliefs on the left side instead of the half-column, which extends around the corner of the building. On the right side, between the two individual windows, there is a half-relief of a camel with his guide.

The second, much higher main floor is equipped with windows according to the same pattern. However, there is a quadruple window in the middle. All windows have three-pass arches with two half four-passages above each . The individual windows of the middle quadruple window are separated from one another by Doric columns, the outer windows again have half-columns; the left of the leftmost window is again replaced by a three-quarter column. In front of the quadruple window and the two outer single windows, like the balconies protruding on the first main floor, the railing consists of three-pass arches instead of balusters. The consoles of the balconies are more elaborate than on the first main floor and bear animal heads. The balcony of the leftmost window also extends around the corner of the building.

The eaves are also supported by small consoles with animal heads. On the roof there is a large dormer in the middle . Window and door frames, balconies with brackets, balusters and tripasses, as well as the eaves with brackets and the relief of the camel are made of Istrian limestone ; the facade is plastered and painted gray-brown.
