Paleomerus hamiltoni is an extinct species of arthropods from the aglaspidida-like order Strabopida .

features

The head plate of Paleomerus hamiltoni is short and about 2.5 to 3 times as wide as it is long. The large eyes are dorsal , in the front area of the head plate, and far apart. The trunk consists of 11 abdominal segments that narrow towards the back and a wide conical telson . Limbs have not been preserved.

Locations

In total, only 4 specimens of this species were found in the Mickwitzia sandstone near Mount Kinnekulle in Sweden .

Systematics

The species was assigned to the monogeneric family Paleomeridae Størmer, 1956 after its first description . However, after another species ( Paleomerus markowskii ) was discovered, both species were classified into the Strabopidae family along with Strabops thacheri . Some authors were of the opinion that P. hamiltoni actually belongs to the genus Strabops . According to a more recent finding (Tetlie & Moore 2004), however, P. hamiltoni differs significantly from S. thacheri in terms of the position of the eyes and the length of the telson . The Paleomeridae family is considered redundant to Strabopidae.
