Palitana was a princely state of British India in the Gohelwar region in the southwest of the Kathiawar peninsula in what is now the state of Gujarat . Its capital was the place Palitana . The principality was founded in 1194 by Thakur Sahib Sekaji, a Gohil - Rajput from the dynasty of the princes of Bhavnagar . Palitana was a British protectorate from 1807 to 1947 . In 1921 it had an area of ​​777 km² and 58,000 inhabitants.

On August 15, 1947, Palitana became a member of the Saurashtra State Union and on February 15, 1948, it joined India (see History of India ). On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved and incorporated into the state of Bombay . With the partition of Bombay on May 1, 1960, Palitana came to Gujarat .
