Palle Kjærulff-Schmidt (born July 7, 1931 in Esbjerg , Denmark ; † March 14, 2018 ) was a Danish film director influenced by the French Nouvelle Vague with a brief career peak in the 1960s and an author.

Life

The son of the actor Helge Kjærulff-Schmidt received extensive artistic training from 1949 and began working as a stage director at the Nørrebros Theater in 1953. In 1957 he made his debut as a film director, initially with Robert Saaskin as a partner, in 1958 Kjærulff-Schmidt worked for the first time in radio, for which he continued to produce productions in later years, and in 1960 he made his debut in television.

Kjærulff-Schmidt's importance is based primarily on two central works from the 1960s: he first attracted attention in 1962 with the behavioral study “ Weekend ”, while four years later he wrote “ Once upon a time there was a war ”, “a delicate initiation story with World War II als Zeit Background ”, which excited critics and ushered in a phase of renewal in Danish cinema. In between he had made the film " To ", which was the Danish competition entry at the 1965 Berlinale . In 1967 he was again represented at the Berlinale with his film Die Geschichte von Barbara . In 1965 he was co-director and co-producer in the film 4x4 , which was shown at the 4th Moscow International Film Festival .

His later productions are far less significant; since the beginning of the 1970s he could hardly make any more films. Kjærulff-Schmidt made his last feature film in 1986 with a film biography about Peter von Scholten , the last Governor General of the Danish West Indies . In the 1990s, the former star director in his country was only able to direct less important television films. During this time he drew attention to himself with other artistic activities and traveled extensively, which he then processed into book reports.
