Palmeira is a small town and commercial port on the west coast of the island of Sal in the Republic of Cape Verde . The place has about 500 inhabitants and is 7 meters above sea level.

Infrastructure

In a sheltered bay, around which Palmeira has arisen, is the main port of Sal, which can also be approached by larger ships. Most of the goods and goods reach the island via this, including in particular the fuel required by the airlines . The port city is about four kilometers away from the island's capital Espargos .

In addition to the trading port, there are also moorings for the boats of the local fishermen in the bay. The cityscape of Palmeira is not very attractive. It is characterized by the shipyards and port facilities, wrecks as well as large oil tanks and warehouses. The beach south of the city is also not kept clean. In the north of the city there are some wind turbines that use the constant trade winds to generate electricity. The center of Palmeira, on the other hand, is a bit more pristine: Among other things, there is the ancient market hall, which is in good condition and is still regularly used by the island's farmers to sell their meat or vegetable products. In the relatively narrow streets of the town center there are a few bars and taverns, as are common in port cities.

geography

In the hinterland of Palmeira there is an oasis that is used by some of the residents for agriculture for their livelihood. The only paved road leads to Espargos, there are also some sandy slopes. One of them leads south to the beach of Praia Fontana , another leads north to Buracona , an interesting place for tourists. There is a naturally formed basin in the volcanic basalt rocks of the Atlantic coast, which, due to its slightly elevated position, does not lead directly into the sea, but is constantly supplied with fresh water by the strong surf. When the sea is calm, you can take a refreshing swim in this natural pool. Not far from there is the so-called "Blue Eye", a rock breakthrough a few meters down to the sea, through which the sun shines through at certain times of the day and makes the water in this shine blue.
