Panaitios ( Latinized Panaetius , therefore German also outdated Panäz ; * around 180 BC on Rhodes , † around 110 BC) was a Stoic philosopher of the late Hellenism .

life and work

Panaitios was born the son of Nicagoras into an old, important family from Rhodes. He studied philosophy with Diogenes of Babylon in Athens . He then lived temporarily in Rome, where he contributed to the spread of Greek, especially Stoic, philosophy and was on friendly terms with Laelius and the younger Scipio , whom he accompanied to Carthage in 146 and later on a trip to Egypt and Asia. Afterwards Panaitios directed the stoic school in Athens for a long time. His students include Poseidonios and Hekaton . He died around 110 BC. He is considered to be the founder of the middle Stoa.

The concept of the theologia tripartita goes back to him . Only insignificant remains of his writings have come down to us; Marcus Tullius Cicero has often quoted his main work on duty (περὶ τοῦ καθήκοντος) in his work De officiis . It is controversial whether Panaitios was more aimed at a Greek or primarily a Roman audience.
