Panera Bread Company is an American chain of bakery-cafes ( fast-casual restaurants ) in the United States and Canada. The headquarters are in Sunset Hills , Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis (in the St. Louis metropolitan area , the chain operates under the name "Saint Louis Bread Company").

The company, which also owns Au Bon Pain , is part of the JAB Holding Company , which is owned by the Reimann family in Germany. Panera has a wide range of pastries and baked goods, such as croissants, bagels, cookies, teas, muffins and brownies. These, along with Panera's artisanal bakeries, are usually baked by a baker before sunrise. Apart from the bakery, Panera has a normal menu to eat in or take away. These include: Panini sandwiches , pasta, soups, flat bread, salads, side dishes, "Panera Kids", fruit smoothies, frozen drinks, coffee, tea and lemonade, espresso , coffee lattes and hot chocolate .

St. Louis Bread was founded in 1987 by Ken Rosenthal. The first place was in Kirkwood , Missouri. In 1993 Au Bon Pain Co. took over the St. Louis Bread Company and in 1997 changed the company name to Panera, from the Latin word for "bread basket".

In 1999 Panera Bread began expanding nationwide. There are now more than 2000 Panera Bread stores in 46 states.

In 2005 Panera was ranked 37th on BusinessWeek's list of high-growth companies; profits were $ 38.6 million, up 42.9%.
