Obstetrician Vincent and architect Florence Leroy want to divorce after 15 years of marriage. At first they agree on everything, but when the opportunity arises for both of them to take on a dream job where their children would be a hindrance, a fight begins. One wants to give the other person custody of the children in order to be free for the new job. Mathias, Emma and Julien are not exactly easy to act as teenagers, but the parents want to let the three of them decide who they want to live with in the future. That goes wrong, however, because the children refuse. So they demand that their parents just take a little more time and get a divorce later. But now a real fight breaks out between Vincent and Florence. Everyone wants to convince the children that they would be better off with the other parent. In turn, everyone should look after the children alone. Without asking her husband, Florence decides that it would be his turn the next day. But then she secretly worries whether they are okay. Vincent takes advantage of this and takes the three of them to the clinic, where they attend a caesarean delivery, which their mother will certainly not like. In return, Florence gives Emma a party at which it is quite embarrassing and Vincent immediately brings his daughter home. On the other hand, he takes his eldest son Mathias to a table dance bar , only to provoke Florence with it. The competition escalates on Julien's ninth birthday, when her parents have a bitter exchange of blows in front of all the guests. But with all the back and forth, when even their clothes are in tatters, they briefly rediscover their attraction for each other and spend the night together. In doing so, they do not notice that the children are finally fed up and have secretly disappeared. While Vincent and Florence file a missing person report with the police, the house at home that Julien's hamster set off because no one took care of him catches fire. The children can be found quickly, but they are now with their parents in front of a pile of broken glass. Out of necessity, Florence takes the children with her to Denmark, to their new job, and Vincent flies alone to Haiti, where he wants to work for “Doctors Without Borders”. When he flies back to Europe after 7 months, his children pick him up from the airport. Florence is there too and Vincent stares at her baby bump . When he said “Is that a joke?” Florence replies “No, a girl!” Both smile at each other and know that they will now have four children.

The world premiere was on January 16, 2015 as part of the L'Alpe d'Huez International Comedy Film Festival. In France, the film was released on February 4, 2015 the cinemas in Germany on July 9, 2015. The German television premiere was on September 26, 2016 Sky Cinema .

In 2016 the sequel Happy Divorce - Mama Against Papa 2 was produced.

Anke Sterneborg from epd Film wrote: "In contrast, Martin Bourboulon's feature film debut, Mama versus Papa - Whoever loses here wins, a refreshingly different, unrestrained, politically incorrect perspective on the custody dispute."

The film service came to the conclusion: "If the comedy initially attacks sharp-tongued sexisms and social expectations, the attacks of the parents, despite all the coquettish political incorrectness, soon become more and more cross-border and lose credibility."
