features

Pangasius krempfi has a broadly rounded, elongated snout with a lower mouth . The body is iridescent greenish-blue on the top, the belly is milky-white and the fins are colorless to yellowish. The body has no drawing. In dead animals, the back appears dark gray to almost black and the belly light gray. The species reaches a length of up to 120 cm and a weight of a maximum of 14 kg. The palatal teeth sit in two crescent-shaped rows that extend over the palatine bone and ploughshare bone . The gill trap has 19 to 22 rays on the first arch. The dorsal fin has one hard and six to seven soft rays, the anal fin has four hard and 31 to 34 soft rays.

Way of life

Pangasius krempfi likely spends much of its adult life in the coastal waters of the South China Sea. To spawn, the animals migrate into the Mekong from May onwards, penetrating at least as far as the Mekong Falls . The eggs are mainly laid between June and August, the young animals then drift down the Mekong with the current. The diet is unknown, but plant material is likely to be consumed in the Mekong.
