Pangasius pangasius is the type species of the fish genus Pangasius within the shark catfish family. The species occurs in the major rivers and estuaries of the Indian subcontinent and Myanmar . It is found in the Ganges , Godavari and Irrawaddy, and possibly in Krishna . The species is an important food fish that is fished in the wild and isgrownin aquaculture in Thailand , Cambodia and Vietnam, among others. In this role, the species was probably released into the wild in large parts of its range.

Pangasius pangasius is up to three meters in length, next to Pangasius sanitwongsei, the largest species of the genus. The snout is pointed in young animals, but is rounded in older animals. The eye is small. The mouth is below, the palatal teeth consist of two rows of teeth each on the palatine bone and ploughshare bone . The barbels extend to the gill opening. The body has no special markings, but the tail fin is bright yellow in adult animals. The dorsal fin has two hard and seven soft rays, the anal fin has 29 to 32 soft rays. The gill trap has 23 to 28 rays on the first arch.

Way of life

The species colonized the freshwater area of the estuaries as juveniles and later migrated to the brackish water and coastal areas. Various molluscs , insects , other invertebrates, fish and plants serve as food . Sexual maturity is reached with a length of about 60 cm, life expectancy is over 10 years.
