Pantaleón Astiazarán

Pantaleón Astiazarán (born May 1, 1948 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) is a Uruguayan photographer .

Astiazarán, who uses the signature Panta Astiazarán for his works , began working as an independent photographer in 1970. His photographs have been published in Brazil in Veja , O Estado de San Paulo and Zero Hora . He was also featured in Panorama, which was published in Buenos Aires at that time. He successfully completed a medical degree in 1976, later trained in diving medicine in France and settled in Brazil the following year in order to pursue his professional activity in this field until 1991. Since 1980 he has also worked for the French company COMEX on projects in Brazil, Africa and Europe. In 1992 Astiazarán, who had already published a photography book with the title Como agua entre as mâos in 1980, gave up his profession as a doctor and from then on devoted himself entirely to photography. He worked in this field for the newspaper Alternativa , Brecha and from 1985 to 1997 for El País Cultural . From 1995 he was a photo editor and editorial consultant at Tres magazine . Five years later he started working as a photo editor for the Latin American division of Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Astiazarán participated in numerous group exhibitions. From 1975 to approx. 2002, Astiazarán, who has also been represented in the Museo Virtual de Artes El País (MUVA) since 1997 , also has around 20 solo exhibitions.
