Pantanodon is a genus of fish from the order of the tooth fish(Cyprinodontiformes). The genus consists of two previously described species, one of which is considered extinct. Pantanodon stuhlmanni occurs in freshwater and brackish water ( lagoons , mangroves ) on the East African coast from the mouth of the Tana in Kenya to the Rufiji Deltain Tanzania, the extinct species Pantanodon madagascariensis lived in freshwater in northeast Madagascar. The IUCN lists a third, previously undescribed species, Pantanodon sp. nov. 'Manombo'. It is known only from a few preserved specimens kept in the American Museum of Natural History and the University of Michigan Zoological Museum. They come from aswampwith pandanus in the Manombo nature reserve in the southeast of Madagascar.

features

Pantanodon species are 3.5 to 5 cm long and externally resemble the Southeast Asian, only distantly related rice parsley ( Oryzias ). They are flattened on the sides and, compared to other toothpits, they are more compact and high-backed. The mouth is terminal, the head pointed. The dorsal and anal fins begin behind the center of the body. The base of the dorsal fin is shorter than that of the anal fin. The caudal fin is slightly rounded. The fish are yellowish-brown in color, the back being darker and more brown and the belly being whitish. The fins of the females are transparent. Pantanodon species do not have pharyngeal teeth , which is why it is assumed that they feed on plankton.

Systematics

The genus Pantanodon was introduced in 1955 by the American ichthyologist George Sprague Myers . Type species is Pantanodon podoxys , today a synonym for Pantanodon stuhlmanni . Usually Pantanodon is placed in the Procatopodinae , a subfamily of the glow-eyed fish within the family Poeciliidae . A phylogenetic investigation showed, however, that the genus outside of the Poeciliidae occupies a basal position in the suborder Cyprinodontoidei (see cladogram in the systematic section under the toothpidings). The subfamily Pantanodontinae, which was introduced by Myers in 1955, was therefore elevated to family status at the beginning of 2018.
