The Monastery of Pantokratoros ( Greek Μονή Παντοκράτορος ) is an Orthodox monastery on the island of Athos in Greece . It is located on the northeast side of the peninsula and is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord ( August 6th ). In the ranking of the twenty monasteries on Mount Athos, it takes seventh place. In 1997 about 15 monks worked in the monastery.

history

The monastery was from April to August 1357 the brothers Alexios and John, two monks of Greek origin and relatives of the Byzantine emperor John V , was founded. Alexios had previously been Grand Stratopedarchis (Imperial General), Johannes Gross-Primikerios (Chancellor).

Buildings, equipment, library

The catholicon of the monastery, consecrated to the Transfiguration of Christ, was built in 1363 and has a large number of valuable frescoes, some from the time of construction.

The miraculous icon Panagia Gerontissa is located on the left crossing pillar of the Katholikons.

There are around 350 manuscripts and 3,500 printed books in the library. The monastery documents are written in Greek and Turkish.

Various skis belong to the Monastery of Pantokratoros: u. a. Skiti Profítou Ilíou (Σκήτη Προφήτου Ηλíου), Skiti Axion Estin (Σκήτη Άξιον Εστίν).
