Paolo Dall'Oglio
Paolo Dall'Oglio (born November 17, 1954 in Rome ) is an Italian Jesuit and Islamic scholar . Dall'Oglio became known in the 1980s as the new founder of the Syrian Catholic Dair Mar Musa al-Habaschi ("Monastery of St. Moses of Abyssinia") in the desert north of Damascus in Syria . The community is also open to Christians from ancient oriental , orthodox and other churches. Paolo Dall'Oglio is particularly dedicated to the dialogue with Islam . His open charges of crimes against humanity by the Syrian regime in the wake of the 2011 civil war in Syria led to his expulsion. The deportation took place on June 12, 2012. At the end of July 2013 he entered rebel territory in eastern Syria and was kidnapped by members of the Islamic State organization in Iraq and the Levant while he was traveling in Raqqa .
Life
Paolo Dall'Oglio entered the Jesuit Order in 1975 . He spent the novitiate in Italy before beginning his studies of Arabic and Islamic studies in Beirut and Damascus .
In 1982 he opened up the ruins of the old Syrian monastery Dair Mar Musa al-Habaschi, which can be traced back to a hermitage of St. Moses of Abyssinia from the 6th century and which had been abandoned since the 17th century.
In 1984 Dall'Oglio was ordained a priest in the Syrian Catholic Rite. In the same year he graduated in Arabic and Islamic studies from the University of Naples L'Orientale and in Catholic theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University .
In 1986 he obtained another Masters degree in Mission Studies from the Pontifical Gregorian University.
In 1989 he received his doctorate from the same Pontifical Gregorian University. He wrote his dissertation on "Hope in Islam".
In 1992 he founded the mixed monastic and ecumenical community al-Khalil ("the friend of God" - biblical and Koranic epithet for the Patriarch Abraham in Arabic), which is dedicated to the Islamic-Christian dialogue and whose first monastery in the newly settled Dair Mar Musa al -Habashi was opened.
In 2009 he received an honorary doctorate from the Université catholique de Louvain / Katholieken Universiteit Leuven .
He works regularly for the magazine Popoli, the international magazine of the Italian Jesuits founded in 1915.
In 2012 he received the Lombardy Region Peace Prize, which is awarded every year for peace achievements.
Expelled from Syria in 2012
He led the renovation of the historic 4th century Mar Elian Monastery in Karjatain . In 2011 he wrote an article proposing a peaceful solution to the civil war in Syria. In it he called for a political transition to a democratic structure in the country. This should be based on a consensus among the various actors that takes into account the sensitive social and religious coexistence in Syria. A sharp reaction from the Assad regime followed, leading to the expulsion of Dall'Oglio from Syria. Notwithstanding this, Dall'Oglio did not feel bound by the deportation in December 2011 and continued to reside in Syria.
Kidnapping in July 2013
At the end of July 2013, he entered the rebel area in eastern Syria and was kidnapped by members of the Islamic State organization in Iraq and the Levant while he was traveling in Raqqa . Reports that he was executed are unconfirmed.
