Papa George

Papa George (* 9. May 1953 as George Papa Nicola in London ) is an English blues guitarist, singer and songwriter.

biography

George Papanicola is the son of Greek Cypriots who met and married in London. He got his first guitar from his parents at the age of 10 and taught himself to play. Under the influence of blues greats like John Lee Hooker , Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf , who gave concerts in London, he found his passion in the blues . As a teenager he started performing as a musician. His first band "Taxi" was the opening act for Tina Turner in 1983 .

Papa George played several times in the United States . In 1986 he founded the Papa George Band, which enjoyed success in London and the surrounding area and toured Europe. They have appeared with Micky Moody , Zoot Money , Freddie Mercury , Paul Jones , Roger Chapman , Jon Lord and Gary Moore , among others .

In addition to his work with the band, Papa George is also known as a soloist. Sometimes he performs as a duo with well-known colleagues, such as Micky Moody , Ken Emerson , Alan Glen or Ali Maas .

Awards

  • 2003: The song Moonshadows On Coconut Grove , written by Anne Marshall and Papa George, was covered by Ken Emerson and was released on the Hawaiian Tangos, Hulas and Blues album , which received a Hawaiian Music Award
  • 2004: The song Blues With A Feelin , written and interpreted by Papa George, is in the soundtrack of the film World White Waves , which received a "Milagro Award" at the Santa Fe Film Festival
  • 2013: Admission to the Blues Hall of Fame as "Master Blues Artist from England"
  • 2016: British Blues Award in the "British Blues Great" category
