history

Play and skate area on the poplar square

The Pappelplatz was created in 1833 as a triangular square north of Invalidenstrasse between Ackerstrasse and Elisabethkirchstrasse. Actually, this square served as a marketplace for the residents of the newly created residential complex . Between the years 1892 and 1893, the Berlin City Garden Director Hermann Mächtig designed the first green space in a simple form with a semicircular seating niche. The prepared strip along Invalidenstrasse was retained for the weekly market days.

Buildings

In 1907, on the initiative of the sculptors ' association of the Berlin Artists' Association, there was an ideas competition for the beautification of the Poplar Square. 53 designs by 43 artists from Berlin and the surrounding area were submitted and exhibited in an adjoining room of the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1909 for evaluation by the VBK artists. All competition entries provided for a fountain in the square. Ernst Wenck's design with the title The Money Counter was favored and was implemented. In 1912 a larger than life figure of a kneeling athlete in a money counter pose was ceremoniously unveiled in the center of the square. The shape of the monumental sculpture, carved from shell limestone , is intended to be a reminder of the earlier market days in this area. In 1977 the East Berlin magistrate had the entire square on Invalidenstrasse also decorated with rose beds. On the northern side of the square, a semicircular staircase with three steps leads to a wide plateau with benches. The woodland shields the surrounding streets. The poplar square is registered as a garden monument in the Berlin monument list.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the square was historically redesigned with funding from the Urban Monument Protection Program . Missing trees and shrubs were replanted, and the money counter well was completely restored using historical materials. In addition, the space between Invalidenstrasse and Ackerstrasse received a skater facility from funds . The passage for motor traffic was interrupted. The historic renovations were completed in 2006.
