The Papua Island ( Spanish Islote Papua , English Papua Iceland ) is an approximately one hectare large island in the group of the Joinville Island group off the northeastern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula . In the Larsen Canal , it is a good 5 km west of Boreal Point and just under 2 km off the north coast of Joinville Island .
Participants in an Argentine Antarctic expedition carried out from 1953 to 1954 named it after the gentoo penguin ( Pygoscelis papua ), which populates the island in large numbers.
